City Portraits: Johannesburg

PROGRAMMA_ICOSi pensava che Johannesburg sarebbe stato il cuore del nuovo Sudafrica, la “nazione arcobaleno”, dopo la fine dell’apartheid.
Quello che appare oggi più evidente, in quella città, è una situazione tuttora divisa tra forme di segregazione spaziale rimaste immutate, divisioni conservate nelle trasformazioni recenti di larghe parti della struttura urbana originaria, in particolare quelle del vecchio centro degli affari, abbandonate e lasciate a pratiche di economia informale, di vita quotidiana marginale, di pianificazione insorgente da parte di una società plurale e super-diversa.
Da Johannesburg emergono dimostrazioni di creatività importanti e diffuse: la vitalità dei movimenti che animano le sue rumorose strade si traduce in molteplici richieste di ‘diritto alla città’. Johannesburg appare molto vicina all’immagine di una città del futuro: densa di contraddizioni, ma vitale nel produrre reazioni creative.

Il ‘ritratto di città’ che la Scuola di Dottorato in Collaborazione con La Cattedra Unesco SSIIM dedica a Johannesburg intende esplorare le direzioni di trasformazione urbana di una città che appare essere “una città in divenire” per eccellenza, una “city of migrations”.

Al convegno partecipa un numero significativo di studiosi di università sudafricane e di giovani ricercatori europei che hanno fatto del Sudafrica il tema della loro ricerca.
